The centre has ambitious goals and has attracted almost EUR6 million in funding in its first year.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"healt-3616295180\"><div class=\"healt-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div id=\"healt-1968960307\" style=\"margin-top: 30px;margin-bottom: 30px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ul.ie\/limerick-dcrc\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Uni of Limerick banner2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com\/cdn-site.mediaplanet.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2023\/06\/07210318\/Uni-of-Limerick-banner2.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"750\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Experts driving cancer research forward<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Clinical director, Prof Ruth Clifford and academic director Prof Aed\u00edn Culhane believe creating a diverse interdisciplinary environment will be central to the centre\u2019s success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPartnering with our patients, we will inspire multidisciplinary academic, clinical and industry partnerships between the University of Limerick and University Hospital Limerick to catalyse excellence in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ul.ie\/limerick-dcrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cancer research<\/a>,\u201d says Clifford.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Advanced research tools for mapping cancer cells<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Clifford and Culhane gained much of their cancer research experience overseas where they saw first-hand the importance of translating academic discovery to clinical impact and are leveraging <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ul.ie\/limerick-dcrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cutting-edge innovations<\/a> such as spatial single-cell biology, biomaterials engineering and digital health data science and AI technology to yield new insight in cancer biology and treatments to inform clinical care. \u201cThe research tools we have now are very different to what we had five years ago,\u201d Clifford says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cToday, we can get highly detailed molecular data on every, single cancer cell. It means we can take the molecular portraits of that cell and direct medicines more precisely,\u201d&nbsp;reveals Culhane, professor of cancer genomics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The research tools we have now are very <br>different to what we had five years ago.<\/p><cite>Dr Ruth Clifford<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-creating-new-detailed-maps-of-cancer\"><strong>Creating new detailed maps of cancer<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>State-of-the-art technologies are measuring and quantifying tens of thousands of molecules in individual cells. Engineers are developing optical and nanosensors to precisely study real-time cell processes and develop minimally invasive, optical sensors to monitor d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ul.ie\/limerick-dcrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">osage and efficacy of radio and chemotherapy \u2014 <\/a>better tailoring treatment to each patient.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese technologies generate large volumes of data, and interpretation requires advanced computational and statistical methodology. Partnering with Queens University Belfast, the eHealth-Hub for Cancer will train students in best international practices of securely sharing and analysing federated clinical data to further understand cancer at scale.&nbsp;The Limerick Digital Cancer Research Centre is also partnering with Irish and European organisations to support Genomic Data Infrastructure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ul.ie\/limerick-dcrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Access to a large data pool brings valuable benefits to patients<\/a>.
