neurological condition in Ireland.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>With an estimated 40,000 new patients a year being diagnosed with a neurological condition, it\u2019s often a frightening time for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patientsdeservebetter.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">patients and their families<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"healt-1809901473\"><div class=\"healt-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div id=\"healt-3719600878\" style=\"margin-top: 30px;margin-bottom: 30px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.patientsdeservebetter.ie\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"roche2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-neurology-nurses-speak-out-for-their-patients\"><strong>Neurology nurses speak out for their patients<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The clinical nurses supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nai.ie\/assets\/97\/64D97D38-8CBA-4FB5-8A6DABC56D484440_document\/PDB_Document_2021_D2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">neurology patients<\/a> provide outstanding care. However, there are not enough clinical nurse specialists in neurology; in fact, there are just 42 in Ireland.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why experienced nurses in the field have set up the Irish Neurology Nursing Forum (INNF) \u2014 to call for better resourcing, more funding for education in the speciality, healthcare provision and support for patients and their families.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>We still need another 80 specialist nurses, which we hope will be provided over the next few years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lack of specialist nurses in neurology<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The recently formed INNF is already making progress. Set up to mobilise change nationally, they played a key role as part of last year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patientsdeservebetter.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Patients Deserve Better Campaign<\/a>, which succeeded in securing 23 additional specialist nursing posts which were announced by Minister of State for Disability Anne Rabbitte in the 2023 budget.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two cofounders of the INNF, M\u00e1ire Hayes and Sinead Jordan, both neurology nurse specialists, worked with the Neurological Alliance of Ireland (NAI), 15 of its member organisations and Roche Ireland, to highlight the shortage of specialist nurses in neurology.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan recalls: \u201cAt the time of the Patients Deserve Better Campaign in 2022, 23,000 people were waiting for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nai.ie\/assets\/97\/64D97D38-8CBA-4FB5-8A6DABC56D484440_document\/PDB_Document_2021_D2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">neurology outpatient appointment<\/a> \u2014 and 8,000 of those waiting more than 18 months \u2014 meaning huge delays in diagnosis and treatment. Investing in more neurology nurse specialists will reduce waiting times and Emergency Department presentations, free up capacity for consultants and ensure patients across the country have access to the specialist support they need. It will also align with the Sl\u00e1intecare vision to expand services.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hayes adds: \u201cThe awareness campaign has been really positive in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patientsdeservebetter.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">shedding light on the lack of neurology nurse specialists<\/a>. The \u20ac1.7m funding commitment is a great first step. However, we still need another 80 specialist nurses, which we hope will be provided over the next few years. In the meantime, we invite all neurology nurses to join the INNF.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan highlights: \u201cThere are 10,500 people living with multiple sclerosis in Ireland but just 24 trained specialist nurses in that area. Extraordinarily, there are only four for Parkinson\u2019s patients.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com\/cdn-site.mediaplanet.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2023\/03\/07210416\/Group-Photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8524\" width=\"-117\" height=\"-61\" srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com\/cdn-site.mediaplanet.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2023\/03\/07210416\/Group-Photo.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com\/cdn-site.mediaplanet.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2023\/03\/07210416\/Group-Photo-768x403.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption>Image provided by Irish Neurology Nursing Forum<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Training and development for neurology nurses<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another problem is there is no formal postgraduate course for neurology nurses in Ireland, affecting recruitment. \u201cWe have to go to the UK to gain specialist training, whereas we need training on the ground in Ireland to entice graduate nurses into our speciality,\u201d says Hayes.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To this end, we are collaborating with Professor Orla Hardiman, National Clinical Lead of Neurology, in the design and development of a postgraduate neurology course. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patientsdeservebetter.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Graduate nurses<\/a> will be able to study for the speciality through continuous education modules leading to the required level 9 qualification.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"healt-718556243\"><div class=\"healt-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div id=\"healt-1825439340\" style=\"margin-top: 30px;margin-bottom: 30px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.patientsdeservebetter.ie\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"roche2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com\/cdn-site.mediaplanet.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2023\/03\/07210417\/roche2.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"750\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Roche Ireland is committed to supporting nurse specialists in neurology. \u201cTheir refreshing approach to partnership has been instrumental in getting the INNF established,\u201d says Hayes. \u201cThey also support our training and development.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan says: \u201cThe INNF will give a stronger voice to neurology nurses by enabling them to better advocate for themselves, particularly in addressing challenges with capacity, resourcing, education and policy.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Invest in neurology nurses to reduce backlogs<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Elaine Quinn, neuroscience partner at Roche, concludes: \u201cPeople with neurological conditions have a multitude of complex needs that call for a coordinated, holistic approach.
