The increasing use of oral anti-cancer medication has taken care out of hospitals and into the comfort of patients\u2019 own homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through this community-based approach, patients are also benefitting from the support of clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) in the hospital who act as a link between support in the community and hospital. Many more patients are receiving specialist care in the community through tele-health clinics run by advanced nurse practitioners (ANPs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, as Fidelma Hackett, who leads an ANP haematology clinic in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ul.ie\/limerick-dcrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University Hospital Limerick<\/a>, admits, there is still work to be done when it comes to understanding what this critical group of nurses do.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"healt-869820897\"><div class=\"healt-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div id=\"healt-2092636761\" style=\"margin-top: 30px;margin-bottom: 30px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ul.ie\/limerick-dcrc\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Uni of Limerick desk\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com\/cdn-site.mediaplanet.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2022\/06\/07210742\/Uni-of-Limerick-desk.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"750\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-understanding-specialist-nursing-roles\"><strong>Understanding specialist nursing roles:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>ANPs are specialists, with years of experience in their field and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ul.ie\/limerick-dcrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">master\u2019s degree level qualifications<\/a>. Through regular clinics they do everything from prescribing treatment and managing medication to conducting examinations, and planning follow-up support with other healthcare professionals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNursing by its nature is holistic,\u201d explains Hackett. \u201cAt a clinic, yes, you\u2019re looking for signs of disease progression and any side effects of treatment but you\u2019re also looking at the social, economic and mental health of patients as well as quality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sinead Lawlor, Haematology CNS at University Hospital Limerick, highlights the crucial role of the CNS in providing advice and support for patients during their cancer journey. \u201cPatients can become daunted before their initial consultation. They can be anxious. We advocate and empower patients, helping to prepare them for, what at times can be, a difficult consultation especially when breaking bad news. Patients appreciate having a specific person they know and trust and someone they can call on later from home. We get great feedback all the time about that service.\u201d\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>As nurses, we are very close to patients so we hear their problems and can work to improve the solutions.<\/p><cite>Sinead Lawlor<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Putting patients first<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEverything we do is patient focused,\u201d continues Hackett. \u201cIt\u2019s about streamlining the services and getting patients where they need to be. As nurses, we are very close to patients so we hear their problems and can work to improve the solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lawlor also highlights: \u201cWe coordinate patients\u2019 care with different services, such as dieticians and physiotherapists, and are the link between the hospital and the community.
