Now, we have much to celebrate, but we must be proactive in our approach to cancer.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>Two decades ago, four in ten people with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.ie\/cancer-information-and-support\/cancer-information\/early-detection\/diagnosing-cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"cancer in Ireland (opens in a new tab)\">cancer in Ireland<\/a> survived their diagnosis. To the general public, the idea of preventing some cancer cases through vaccination was a distant dream. Cancer screening in Ireland was in its infancy, with breast screening in its early days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, major <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthnews.ie\/oncology\/the-priority-areas-for-cancer-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">innovations in oncology <\/a>have changed all this. Now, six in ten people with cancer in Ireland survive their diagnosis for at least five years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HPV vaccine is hugely effective<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The safe and hugely effective HPV vaccine\nis saving lives of future generations from HPV-caused cancers. And, despite recent\npublic controversies, our cancer screening services are saving more lives than\never since the expansion into cervical and bowel cancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advances brought about by research empower\nus with the knowledge to make choices to increase our chances of not getting\ncancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Irish Cancer Society has been working\nto spread the benefits of these advances through public awareness since its\ninception more than 50 years ago. Global\nresearch is pointing to CT screening as having the potential to spot lung\ncancer sooner among at-risk groups, thus potentially saving lives. By examining\nthis research, the Irish Cancer Society believes that more than 350 lives in\nIreland every year \u2013 effectively one person a day \u2013 could be saved by lung\ncancer screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As research in this area continues, we\u2019re\nasking the government to put the infrastructure in place that can seize on opportunities\nthat innovations in oncology like this can bring. The promised National\nScreening Committee, recommended in Dr Gabriel Scally\u2019s scoping inquiry into\nour CervicalCheck programme, should give early consideration to the\nintroduction of lung cancer screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As research in the areas of prevention and early detection continue, hopefully more positive advances of potential benefit to patients will be made.
