It\u2019s often manageable but can become chronic, worsened by inequality, stigma and systemic vulnerability.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Ireland&#8217;s healthcare system faces significant challenges. The country has one of the lowest numbers of neurologists per capita in Europe, with less than half the recommended number of specialists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite recognition of the importance of the primary care setting for treating headaches, there is a knowledge gap among healthcare providers. Worldwide, only four hours are committed to headache disorders in formal undergraduate medical training. This leads to a lack of understanding of the condition and frequent dismissal of patients\u2019 concerns and symptoms, leaving the patient to self-manage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-income-inequality-and-migraine-nbsp\"><strong>Income inequality and migraine&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ireland faces deepening inequality, which significantly increases vulnerability to migraine and other chronic conditions. Individuals with severe health conditions are nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/childrensrights.ie\/press-release\/we-should-be-outraged-that-more-than-one-in-five-children-are-growing-up-in-poverty-in-ireland\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">twice as likely to live in poverty<\/a>.<sup>1<\/sup><a id=\"_ftnref1\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup> <\/sup><\/a>The unemployment rate in people living with migraine is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jmcp.org\/doi\/full\/10.18553\/jmcp.2023.29.2.197#con1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two to four times the national average<\/a>, placing individuals living with migraine at a socioeconomic disadvantage.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>People living with migraine <br>spend, on average, 31 hours <br>a month alone in the dark.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-proof-of-workplace-stigma\"><strong>Proof of workplace stigma<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, Migraine Ireland conducted a survey on people\u2019s experience of migraine in their workplace. They faced bullying, written warnings, having to use sick leave or annual leave and being scrutinised by or sent to HR\/occupational health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People living with migraine spend, on average, <a href=\"file:\/\/\/Users\/angelicahackettotoole\/Downloads\/migraine.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/My-Migraine-Voice-Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">31 hours a month alone in the dark, so withdrawal from life and poor mental health become major factors<\/a>.<sup>3<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tackling-migraine-health-inequality\"><strong>Tackling migraine health inequality<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Disability equality must be a top policy priority. Tackling migraine and socioeconomic inequality requires a multifaceted approach:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Expand the number of hours of formal education of primary headache disorders in the healthcare community.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expand the number of neurologists and headache specialists, particularly in underserved areas. Fund primary care to assess, diagnose and treat migraine early.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Continue to integrate mental health and trauma care into chronic pain pathways\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Address social determinants of health by working to tackle the broader social factors that contribute to health disparities, including poverty and discrimination.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhance public awareness of migraine and its impact, reducing stigma and encouraging individuals to seek help.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Migraine affects 750,000+ in Ireland.
