Funded by Movember, the registry is part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipcor.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Irish Prostate Cancer Outcomes Research (IPCOR)<\/a> programme. It builds on the earlier IPCOR1 study, which ran until 2020 and assessed the impact prostate cancer had on men\u2019s quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"healt-750730987\"><div class=\"healt-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div id=\"healt-2586229957\" style=\"margin-top: 30px;margin-bottom: 30px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcor.ie\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"IPCOR2\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com\/cdn-site.mediaplanet.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2024\/06\/07205814\/IPCOR2.jpg\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com\/cdn-site.mediaplanet.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2024\/06\/07205814\/IPCOR2.jpg 1563w, https:\/\/s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com\/cdn-site.mediaplanet.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2024\/06\/07205814\/IPCOR2-768x256.jpg 768w, https:\/\/s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com\/cdn-site.mediaplanet.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2024\/06\/07205814\/IPCOR2-1536x512.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1563px) 100vw, 1563px\" width=\"750\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-benchmarking-prostate-cancer-treatment\"><strong>Benchmarking prostate cancer treatment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The IPCOR2 clinical registry will collect high-quality, real-time data on men with prostate cancer, allowing year-on-year and hospital-to-hospital comparisons and benchmarking Irish patient outcomes against international standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consultant urologist David Galvin, based at the Mater and St Vincent\u2019s Hospitals in Dublin, specialising in prostate cancer, says: \u201cIt will provide information and feedback along with patient-reported outcomes, so we can measure how our patients are doing almost instantaneously and compare all our results across Ireland.\u201d Galvin, also IPCOR Principal Investigator, says doctors can additionally monitor patient progress through questionnaires while the registry can inform healthcare providers when making funding decisions by showing which treatments work best for patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Irish registry will link to registries in Australia and New Zealand, meaning treatment outcomes can be compared between men in those countries and Ireland and feed into Movember\u2019s global cancer registry. \u201cThat means that we can benchmark Irish results with our international collaborators,\u201d adds Galvin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It will provide information and feedback along with patient-reported outcomes, so we can measure how our patients are doing almost instantaneously.<\/p>\n<cite>Mr David Galvin, Consultant Urologist, Mater and St Vincent\u2019s Hospital, Dublin<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-boosting-prostate-screening\"><strong>Boosting prostate screening<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Galvin heads the EU-based PRAISE-U prostate cancer screening project and aims to encourage early detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer and ensure patients receive the relevant treatment options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe think there will be an overall reduction in prostate cancer, though that may be limited by the fact that the population is getting older, so there is a general feeling that there is a tsunami of prostate cancer coming down the tracks,\u201d he continues. \u201cWe want to meet that tsunami with smart PSA testing, so we don\u2019t over-detect and over-treat the disease going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through the charity\u2019s support, patients will be monitored more closely. Their outcomes will be checked with the clinical data to ensure that treatments are delivered for the right patients and in relevant settings.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"726\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com\/cdn-site.mediaplanet.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2024\/06\/07205815\/Graphic.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11363\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-irish-registry-to-improve-care\"><strong>Irish registry to improve care<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Movember\u2019s director of clinical quality, Sibilah Breen, who oversees the charity\u2019s clinical quality registries, explains that while the Irish registry will also have research applications, a more significant benefit will lie in the data acquired to feed back to clinicians and improve care. She says: \u201cThere is evidence that by collecting and feeding back data to clinicians, you can positively impact their practice and thereby improve the outcomes for men.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also the hope that the registry will trigger longer-term funding from central government, the HSE and National Cancer Programme in Ireland. It can raise the profile and awareness of men\u2019s health issues in the same way that has been achieved with resources for the female population with pelvic and breast cancers. Now, we are down to 13%, so we can see these changes over time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside patient outcome data, the Irish registry will also cover other factors important to men, with contributions from the lived experience patient group.
