No need to imagine \u2014 it\u2019s real!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From that remote part of County Donegal, one mutation, T80A, has spread across the world \u2014 from Australia to the USA. Available treatments have been shown to slow down and, in some cases, halt disease progression. Recognising the \u2018red flags\u2019 for the disease in its early stage can play a major role in improving patient outcomes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Research into this rare <br>disease is ongoing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-encourage-early-diagnosis-nbsp\"><strong>How to encourage early diagnosis&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We must encourage those known to be carrying the mutation \u2014 or those with confirmed diagnosis \u2014 to be open with family members, share awareness of signs and symptoms and encourage them to seek medical advice at the first sign of any symptom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Family cascade screening widens the testing pool for T80A, facilitating earlier diagnosis of this potentially devastating disease. The availability of \u2014 and access to \u2014 genetic testing will help healthcare professionals diagnose the condition earlier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Genetic testing for hereditary ATTR amyloidosis can now be accessed through GP surgeries across Ireland. What was once a rapidly progressive, debilitating and life-threatening disease now has treatment options, which may slow down progression and improve the quality of life of those affected by hATTR.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research into this rare disease is ongoing. Ireland has a unique connection to hATTR amyloidosis.
