Yet, there&#8217;s also a prevalent positive attitude toward consent.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>How do positive attitudes towards consent exist alongside traumatising sexual harassment experiences? To improve college-based education on consent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consenthub.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Active* Consent programme<\/a> is leading the way in Ireland.<\/p>\n\n\n<div id=\"healt-471208607\"><div class=\"healt-adlabel\">Advertisements<\/div><div id=\"healt-1847524662\" style=\"margin-top: 30px;margin-bottom: 30px;margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consenthub.ie\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Active desk\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.eu-north-1.amazonaws.com\/cdn-site.mediaplanet.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/94\/2023\/12\/07210026\/Active-desk.jpg\" alt=\"\"  width=\"750\" height=\"250\"  style=\"display: inline-block;\" \/><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Findings on sexual violence and consent in students<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Active* Consent 2020 national survey of Higher Education students, conducted with the Union of Students in Ireland, indicated that 4 in 10 (42%) female first-year students (and one in five males) experienced unwanted sexual touching within six months of starting college.<\/li><li>A majority of female college students surveyed agreed they had experienced sexual harassment in the past four years.<\/li><li>In secondary school pupils, most participants agreed that a smile was enough non-verbal consent for intimacy, such as oral sex.<\/li><li>Up to one-third of transition-year male pupils surveyed agreed with incorrect rape myth beliefs.<\/li><li>Despite this, over 80% of young people surveyed say it\u2019s important to talk about consent.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:43px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Sustainable consent education and support <br>for young people requires an equal focus on <br>institutional ownership and staff capacity.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-changing-culture-partnership-youth-engagement-staff-support\"><strong>Changing culture: partnership, youth engagement, staff support<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Empowering students nationwide to shape a safer campus, The Active* Champion programme \u2014 launched at the University of Galway \u2014 provides <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consenthub.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">comprehensive consent training<\/a>. Rooted in 10 years of research, it promotes a sex-positive perspective and inclusivity. Student Champions, from diverse backgrounds, contribute to a supportive environment where no one is judged for their sex choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Last year, over 22,000 first-year students participated in consent workshops.<br>\u2022 About 90% of workshop participants would recommend it to a friend while 91% learned something useful.<br>\u2022 Workshops led to improvements in self-reported consent management skills, knowledge and confidence that peers consider consent important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sustainable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consenthub.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consent education<\/a> and support for young people requires an equal focus on institutional ownership and staff capacity. Over 1,500 staff have trained as consent workshop facilitators since 2016. Consent is for everyone \u2014 all relationships, genders and sexual orientations \u2014 and each type of intimacy.
